About half an hour before sunset the Kohala coastline 14,000 feet below is clear and the sunlight reflects off the Pacific ocean. Distant clouds on the horizon are a worry for tonight, but so far they haven't bothered us.
Well after sunset, Hualalai to the left, Pu`u Poli`ahu in the centre, Submillimeter Valley centre-right and red cirrus clouds above!

The cloud in the top one looks like some overgrown mosquito looking for a meal. :-)
And how unusual to actually see the ocean! Ya know?
Keera - hadn't spotted that - you're quite right! Looks as though it's just about to sting Subaru!
It's quite common to see the ocean from the summit during the morning, but as the day goes on the trade winds tend to wrap the clouds forming over the island onto the leeward side and at sunset it's rare to be able to see the coastline. It's only when you can see the coast that you realise how high up you are! You don't get much perspective of that normally.
One thing I want to do this year is take a picture of Kaloli Point at sunrise from the summit (it's where I live). Let's see how that works out! It means a clear east coastline and the best bet for that is early morning before the trades blow the clouds in.

Well, that explains the lack of ocean in all the sunset shots. ;-) Looking forward to the sunrise ones!
