Once upon a time

In an article many months ago I think I boasted about how clear the night sky was from my house. I can't find that blog entry now, but regret writing it because since then I can't recall the last clear night - at least from down here at sea level. The photo above is from late February this year when I was trying to figure out how to take night-time photos with my camera. Even then the sky wasn't completely clear, but at least the stars were visible with Orion overhead.

Since then there has been no clear night. Not one. What's going on? When I first moved here it seemed that every other night I could walk out the door and be met with an incredibly clear, dark and star-filled sky. It usually took seconds to spot the Andromeda galaxy, it was that dark.

Now it's coquis, mud, clouds and continual drizzle. If it wasn't for the coquis I'd swear I was living back in north-west England...

You may be having one of those years that we had: Weather patterns changed and gave us nothing but rain and clouds for 90 days straight. Drove us nuts. Although my neck of the woods is famous for its rain, it tends to vary from week to week. Fortunately, we haven't had a repeat (yet). But it wasn't new; we barely broke some record from 1963 or thereabouts.

Maybe it is the time of the year? Sometimes also when we start to pay attention to things, suddenly we see it in a different way or we notice things more. I swear that when I was a child the summers were always warm and we always had snow in the winter. Now there is this fall like year around climate. But I am sure that can not possibly be true.;))

WE have the clear nights. But we do not want them. Heat and dust all summer long. Drought year upon drought year. It's the plagues of Egypt, or something.

I think it's more "just one of those years" rather than a typical spring. I've been here long enough to acclimatise and in the 12 years so far only wore hoodies in February, but I'm still wearing one this April! (Don't worry, it's been washed once or twice!).

Still, just wait until we have a few days of sun - I'll soon be moaning about how hot it is!
